India extends support to Afghanistan's food crisis with 10,000 tonnes of wheat

Kabul: India has stepped up to help Afghanistan struggling with a severe food crisis and sent 10,000 metric tonnes of wheat. The United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) confirmed the arrival of wheat in Herat city on Tuesday.

As Afghanistan continues to grapple with extreme food insecurity, India's contribution of 10,000 metric tonnes of wheat serves as a significant step towards addressing the pressing humanitarian needs of the country. The UNWFP acknowledged the donation in their tweet and wrote, "Wheat donated by the Government of #India @MEAIndia @dpa_meato @WFP arrived in Herat where it was milled for distribution to hungry families across #Afghanistan. This wheat is part of an in-kind contribution of 10,000 metric tons from India on top of 40,000 tons in 2022."

Recognising the urgency of the situation, the Indian government has been actively engaged in assisting Afghanistan. Last month, an additional 20,000 metric tons of wheat were sent to the country via Iran's Chabahar port, reported Afghanistan-based Khaama Press. Another wheat delivery of 40,000 tons had been facilitated through Pakistan's land border.

The current situation in Afghanistan remains dire, with the Taliban's rule exacerbating the hardships faced by the population. Basic rights, particularly for women, have been severely restricted, further worsening the humanitarian crisis. According to the World Food Programme, Afghanistan ranks among the countries with extreme food insecurity, with approximately nine million people affected by severe economic difficulties and hunger.

Since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, the country has experienced a deteriorating law and order situation, marked by increased terrorism and bombings. The group's restrictive measures have included the prohibition of women from attending schools, and universities, and working with aid agencies.
