Hyderabad: Human feces were found dumped in a water tank meant for the Scheduled Caste community in Irayur village in central Tamil Nadu.

The district authorities, investigating the incident, were shocked to find further evidences of entrenched untouchability being practised in the village.

The teashops in the area reportedly maintain two-glass system alongside, like in many other places, Dalits are not allowed inside temples, NDTV reported.

Pudukottai collector Kavitha Ramu and district police chief Vandita Pandey visited the village after complaints of finding huge quantity of human waste in a 10,000-litre water tank, which is the source of drinking water to around 100 members of the Dalit community.

After children began falling ill and doctors linked it to drinking water source, people climbed up the tank only to find huge quality of feces inside.

The water was found to be turned into yellow and people had been drinking the water ignorant of the feces in it.

Authorities are still clueless about the miscreants behind dumping the waste in the drinking water.

People found the lid of the water tank open when they climbed up to check the water inside.

The locals reportedly said that caste discrimination runs deep in the village with Dalita being denied to enter the temple for three generations.

After the collector and district police chief visited the area, a case was filed against the tea shop owner for keeping two-glass system.

The two officials led the entire Scheduled Caste community to the village temple to find out who stopped them from entering the temple.

At the time a prayer ritual was happening inside and a woman belonging to the upper castes declared that she was possessed by the deity who did not want lower caste people in the temple, police registered a case against her, according to the report.
