Kolkata: The court has given the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) permission to put four doctors and former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, through a lie detector test in relation to the alleged postgraduate trainee rape and murder at the hospital.

In order to obtain authorisation to administer the lie-detecting test to Ghosh and the other four doctors who were on duty on the day of the incident, the CBI brought them before a special court.

Only with the suspect's permission and the court's approval can the lie-detecting test be conducted, the New Indian Express reported.

The CBI claimed in the Supreme Court earlier that the local police had attempted to conceal the rape and death of the post-graduate medic since, by the time the federal agency took over the investigation, the crime scene had been changed. Widespread protests have been triggered by the junior doctor's rape and murder in the hospital seminar hall.

On August 9, early in the morning, the heavily injured medic's body was discovered in the hospital's chest department seminar hall. The next day, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer was taken into custody.

The Calcutta High Court ordered on August 13 that the Kolkata Police hand over the inquiry to the CBI, which began its investigation on August 14.
