Congress MP asks why India can't bring back immigrants by commercial flights
text_fieldsChandigarh: Congress MP, lashed out at the Modi government’s inaction over the deportaion of illegal Indian immigrants being deported by US military aircraft and their being shackled.
Tiwari on Sunday demanded an answer from the Union government why it could not arrange to bring back economic migrants from India by its own commercial flights and avert the ignominy suffered by the passengers in the second batch of immigrants deported from the US.
The second US Army plane carrying immigrants landed at Amritsar on Saturday night, and Tewari took to X (earlier Twitter) to condemn the treatment meted out to Indians.
He wrote that if despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to USA and meeting with US President Donald Trump, Indians were still being deported back shackled and probably handcuffed like galley slaves in ancient times there could be nothing more shameful for India and Indians.
"Till the time NDA/BJP government is getting schadenfreude from the humiliation, ignominy and denial of basic human rights being inflicted on our people," he wrote.
Reports indicated that this time, the women deportees escaped being shackled, but the other passengers were not spared the apparently degrading treatment, especially when the deportees were not physically in a position to escape for anywhere.
Tewari said that what was even more troublesome was the continuing use of US military aircraft as if an attempt was being made to create a new normal with regard to eventual rights for US military bases in India.
He said that if this was not the case, why couldn’t India send its own commercial aircraft to pick up these economic migrants.
