Ranchi: A bus carrying nearly 50 people fell off a bridge in Hazaribag district of Jharkhand on Saturday, killing at least six people and injuring many, PTI reported.

Superintendent of Police Manoj Ratan Chothe informed that the bus was going to Ranchi from Giridih district. It broke the railing of the bridge and fell into a dry spot in Siwanne River in the Tatijharia Police Station area, he added.

"Two passengers died on the spot, while four others were declared dead by doctors at Sadar Hospital in Hazaribag. The fatality figures may go up as some are seriously injured. We are preparing to send them to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi for better treatment," the officer said, adding that a rescue operation was underway as some passengers were still trapped inside the vehicle.

"Some passengers are still stuck in the bus, and we are trying to rescue them by making an exit point with the help of gas cutters," he said.

According to the officer, if the bus had fallen into the water in the middle of the river, the situation would have gone worse.

The official added that a DSP-rank officer and three police stations in charge had been deputed to the spot to monitor the rescue operation.
