Kolkata: A college student kills herself after videos of her went viral that showed her nicking a chocolate at a mall in Jaigaon village of West Bengal's Alipurduar district.

No one has been arrested for filming her without her consent and spreading the videos and images, insulting her for the childish slip.

The teen pleaded guilty after she was caught taking the chocolate without notifying the salesmen.

People working in the mall took photos and videos of her even as she pleaded them not to share them online, according to NDTV.

After the images went viral the third-year college student committed suicide on Sunday night, her family alleged.

The college student's father Ratan Ghosh reportedly said that his elder daughter went with a friends of hers to a shopping mall on September 29.

She made the mistake of taking a chocolate without notifying anyone. Even after she paid the money for the chocolate, the video and photos were made viral, he told reporters.

The family said that the girl was in severe stress as the photos and videos went viral.

The inconsolable father told reporters that the mall authorities could have taken action as per law, rather than post videos online. He asked they had taken her money and taken herself away, adding 'Can they return my daughter?"

A crowd turned out in front of the shopping mall protesting and later they protested at Jaigaon police station on Monday morning.

Police told the reporters that they are investigating the incident and no one has been arrested for spreading the video and images online.

A couple of weeks ago, as a bloodied girl pleaded for help, people gathered around her filming her. She was removed to hospital only after police arrived at the scene.

Indiscriminate filming of people without their consent has become rampant often leading to miserable deaths and accidents. There should be effective laws to restrict filming in public places.
