Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): Ghulam Nabi Azad who quit the Congress to form 'Democratic Azad Party' said on Sunday that only the Congress could fight the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh in the upcoming assembly polls.

Azad left the congress a few months ago after spending 52 years in the party questioning the leadership in a long letter to the party chief Sonia Gandhi.

Azad, who was earlier the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, called Am Aadmi Party "merely a party of UT Delhi", which he can't do anything in these states.

Azad added that APP failed in Punjab and the people of the state would not for them again.

" AAP is merely a party of UT Delhi. They can't run Punjab efficiently, only Congress can challenge BJP in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh as they have an inclusive policy," he was quoted.

Azad seemed to be having some confidence in the Congress when he said he was not against the party's police of secularism but he questioned its weak party system.

"Although I have separated from Congress, I wasn't against their policy of secularism. It was only due to the party's system getting weakened. I would still want Congress to perform well in Gujarat and HP Assembly polls. AAP isn't capable to do so," he was quoted as saying.

Azad welcomed the hints laid down by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman about the centre's plan to restoring state status to J&K.

Ghulam Nabi Azad who was on a tour of Doda to address rallies quit the Congress on August 26 calling Sonia Gandhi in his letter to the party " a nominal head" and her son Rahul Gandhi a "non-serious individual" and "immature".
