You season 5: Old enemies may return, loose ends will be tied in the finale
text_fieldsNetflix has announced that season five of its hit psychological thriller show 'You' will be the final one. During the annual Tudum presentation, the streaming platform revealed more information and teased some possibilities.
Fans got to see a special video message from lead actor Penn Badgley. He was saying there are many loose ends from Joe's past in the show which hinted that some enemies from his past may return. Some of those loose ends are Dr. Nicky, Sherry, and Cary Conrad. His young friends Paco and Ellie are also like candidates. Theo Engler, Joe’s wife Love Quinn's former lover, may also come seeking revenge for her murder.
The OTT platform released season four of You in two parts - in February and March. It was well received and in the end of which Joe returned to New York from London with his billionaire girlfriend Kate Galvin Lockwood. While he is far from the bookstore salesman when the show started, coming back to the city hints at his story coming full circle.
The first season of the show was an instant hit and had a cultural impact because it showed how social media and technology made it so easy for him to stalk the woman he is obsessed with and manipulate the circumstances to turn the tide in his favour.
Penn Badgley has also become a strong voice for being candid about his character Joe's popularity. He has never shied away from calling out why social conditioning and white supremacy are making his character likeable.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, he said: "We can’t lead ourselves to believe that if Joe would simply find the right person that he would be happy — because he’s a f–king murderer." He told New York Times, "Joe is this work in progress in dismantling and dissecting the myriad privileges that a young, attractive, white man carries with him."
"Joe is not actually looking for true love. He’s not actually a person who just needs somebody who loves him. He’s a murderer. He’s a sociopath. He’s abusive. He’s delusional. And he’s self-obsessed," he told Entertainment Weekly when asked about fans rooting for Joe and being fascinated with him.
The actor has also said if Joe Goldberg was a person of colour or looked less conventionally beautiful, audiences will not be so quick to forgive his crimes. You is an adaptation of the novel by Caroline Kepnes.
