Oscars 2025 nominations: Indian film Anuja shines amidst major snubs
text_fieldsThe 97th Academy Awards nominations have been announced, revealing mixed fortunes for Indian cinema.
Despite high hopes for a strong presence this year, only one Indian film, Anuja, has secured a nomination, leaving nine other contenders out of the race.
Directed by Adam J. Graves and produced by Guneet Monga and Priyanka Chopra, Anuja has earned a nomination in the Best Live Action Short Film category. The film tells the poignant story of nine-year-old Anuja, portrayed by Sajda Pathan, who works in a Delhi garment factory alongside her sister Palak, played by Ananya Shanbhag. When faced with a pivotal decision, Anuja takes on the heavy responsibility of securing her family’s future, making for a deeply moving narrative.
While Anuja has garnered attention, several highly anticipated Indian films failed to make the cut. Among the overlooked titles were Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, Putul, Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life, All We Imagine As Light, Band of Maharajas, Kanguva, The Zebras, Girls Will Be Girls, and Santosh.
These films, each with unique stories and compelling artistry, had sparked discussions about India’s potential to claim a larger space at the Oscars this year.
The nominations were revealed during a live-streamed ceremony hosted by actor-writer-comedians Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The duo announced nominees across all 24 categories.
The much-awaited 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 2 at the iconic Dolby Theatre, with Conan O’Brien serving as the evening’s host.
