The world's most expensive pineapple costs a whopping ₹ 1 Lakh

Perhaps you don't swoon over the pineapple growing in your backyard. Because, the thorny fruit available in the market does not cost much.

Hence you don't give a damn about plucking it and eating. If you know how much Heligan pineapple costs you will certainly go back to the backyard.

The Heligan pineapple, taking its name from the garden where it grows in England's Cornwall, costs about 1000 pound sterling. Let's do the math—it is Rs 1 lakh.

BBC reports that the pineapple takes two to three years to be ready for consumption.

The fruit plant first arrived in Britain in 1819 before calling the place its home, but the horticulturists realised that the climate is good for pineapple.

They were not ready to give up and devised tricks to grow the plant by planting them in specially designed wooden pit-shaped pots.

A lavish supply of decomposing manure was added to nourish them, alongside using a pickup heater.

The heat warms the air that enters the pits through vents in the wall.

A Heligan spokesperson linked the huge cost of the fruit to man hours, transport of manure, maintenance and other costs involved in raising them, according to the BBC.

The spokesperson said it fruit costs them upwards of 1,000 pounds.

The Heligan website said that Queen Elizabeth II was gifted the second pineapple ever grown here.

If put on auction each pineapple can fetch up to ₹ 10 lakh, according to NDTV report.
