Discussion ended without a decision: Workers' union at Ford India

Chennai: According to a union official at Ford India Private Ltd, the meeting with Ford Motor Company's top official to reexamine the company's decision to stop vehicle manufacture in India ended in failure.
The workers union had asked for a meeting with the top officials of Ford Motor Company involved in the decision of closing down three of the four plants in India.
"We had a meeting with an official who is part of Ford Motor Company's IMG (International Markets Group) on Monday. We were told the decision to close down the Indian plants is final and there will be no change in that," a Union leader said.
According to him, the workers want to keep their positions and aren't looking for a one-time settlement.
A press release issued by Ford India on September 9 said the company plans to stop car assembly in Sanand, Gujarat, by the end of 2021 and vehicle and engine production in Chennai by the second half of 2022. In Chennai and Sanand, Ford India has vehicle and engine production facilities.
According to Ford executives, the company's decision to "exit India" will leave around 5,300 people - workers and staff - with an unclear future.
The Chennai facility of Ford India employs roughly 2,700 associates (permanent workers) and about 600 personnel.
