AI research: India far below US and China, says study

New Delhi: Despite India’s huge resource in technology talent, the country ranks far below the US and China in artificial intelligence (AI) research. In 2018-2023, India stood at 14th in the field with a global share of just 1.4 per cent in paper contributions in the top 10 AI conferences in the world, The Economic Times reported, citing a study by AI accelerator and ecosystem builder Change Engine.

According to the study, the US and China are among the top AI researchers in the world, with 30.4 per cent and 22.8 per cent, respectively. The study added that India needed to grow AI research by at least 40 per cent a year to cover a 5 per cent global share in the next five years to create a world-class innovation ecosystem, ET reported.

The Change Engine report, titled, further said that India registered a compound annual growth of 15.5 per cent in AI paper presentation in the decade of 2014-2023. However, titled ‘India’s State of AI Research: India’s Performance in Top Conferences as compared to the World’, the US and China’s levels ranged between 20 per cent and 30 per cent.

Change Engine’s research examined the top 10 conferences on AI, Machine Language and data engineering with A+ and A ranking in the world. It also examined the contribution of countries over the past decade.
